NORTHERN SUBURBS CREMATORIUM

Designed by Frank I'Anson Bloomfield in the early 1930’s, the Northern Suburbs Crematorium had suffered extensive concrete cancer and damage due to unsympathetic refurbishments over the years. It’s distinctive chimney tower had fallen into a state of disrepair with extensive defects in the concrete slabs, roof structure and decorative concrete balustrades. STRUCTURE provided remediation advice and designed a replacement balustrade system that utilised carved Hebel panels which replicated the original filigree design. These were strengthened with concealed epoxy bonded stainless steel rods which ensured structural adequacy and heritage sensitivity.
